Waste Management

Regular Garbage

By-law 2009-013 regulates the collection of garbage. It will take place on Tuesday starting at 7:00 AM.

Regular garbage is defined as normal household discards as well as any household item such as fridges, stoves, sofa, etc. Construction material, as well as permanent household fixtures (sinks, toilets, etc.), will not be removed by the regular garbage pick-up.

Green Waste Collection

In an effort to improve the “greening” of our Town as well as to conform to standards being put in place by the province and the agglomeration, a weekly green waste collection will take place starting April 27th and continuing until the end of November.  The new collection applies to all residential and institutional building types.  This green waste collection will replace the Friday garbage collection that has taken place in the past.  It is to be noted that the vast majority of municipalities in Canada have once a week garbage collection. On the island, Westmount, Côte Saint-Luc, Beaconsfield, Hampstead, TMR, and others have had once a week collection for a long time. Accepted green waste includes:

  • Outdoor spring cleaning debris and other landscaping work waste

  • Waste from gardens and fruit trees

  • Cut grass and weeds

Kitchen waste is NOT accepted in the green waste pickup.

Tree branches are NOT permitted.

Plastic bags (regular, compostable or biodegradeable) are NOT permitted.

All green waste must be placed in one of the following accepted containers:

  • A reusable container (i.e. garbage bin)
  • Cardboard boxes
  • Paper bag for garden waste

for closed containers, leaves in an accepted container (excluding plastic bags) and shrubs and branches tied up in bundles as of 9 PM Thursday night; -other green waste in uncovered containers or paper bags must be placed outside by 7 AM on Friday mornings.

Please note that regular garbage may no longer be put out on Fridays and will not be collected. Residents who put out non green waste as described above will be fined as per the Town's by-laws.

Special Pick Ups

Please ensure that all the material has been placed at the front of the property before you call the Public Works Department.  A Public Works representative will then evaluate the cost of the pickup (there is a minimum $20 charge for all pickups). After receiving payment, the pickup will be collected as soon as possible.

Please be advised that loose soil, earth, rock, etc. will NOT be picked up by the Town.  Any building materials must be placed in durable construction bags that do not exceed 35 pounds per bag.  No tires, paints, solvents or other hazardous materials will be collected by the Town. If you have any questions with regards to accepted materials, please call the Public Works Department at 514 485-8597.

Recycling Collection

The recycling bin will be picked up on Tuesday starting at 7:00 AM throughout the year.  You are asked to make sure that the contents are secure so that they are not affected by the wind.
